Coolant Options

I've had 2 of my trucks for 5 years now & think I should change the coolant.
They were both purchased new & have around 40K on them.
Should I change out the Dexcool?
What is better?
Is it worth changing to the propylene glycol coolant?
Thanks.

IMHO, I would encourage you to do a good full flush on the systems and go with a good Green (Propylene Glycol) antifreeze, most users had little problems with it's use looooooooong before the advent of Dexcrap and other "extended life" coolants.
Only drawback I have with giving that advice is, it seems after the switch, all of the sludge and gunk that Dexcrap created , that you flush out to switch coolants, somehow seems to have plugged all of the holes left by the Dexcrap , and will inherently lead you to replace head gaskets , intake gaskets , water pumps and some other cooling system parts .
Perhaps BP could have put the residue left by Dexcrap to good use plugging the friggin hole in the oil well

Well said.
I also despise Dex-Crap
1997 Gran Prix - Water pump failed and was corroded at 37k
2001 Blazer- Water pump failed and bolts were very corroded at 43K
2000 Chevy S10 4cyl. Radiator failed at 50K. Flushed and filled and we drove it to 120k before selling it.
Change all of our vehicles to green as soon as they are out of warranty

I was just pondering taking the Yukon down to have it flushed and refilled. 6 years and 87,000 miles on the dexcrap. So far no issues.

I've seen several with the Dexcool that looked like they had mud in the radiator.

OK ... point taken .... "Dexcrap" is out
Going for the green, non-toxic, propylene glycol stuff.
Preferred brand???

Most brands are similar ingredients.

I would say there are only a couple places really making the stuff, just depends on whose bottle they put it in. I have always used Prestone over the years, but no real loyalty.

Hey
In defense of Dex Cool, I have used it in my '92 SS withjout incident. I'm now at 175,000 miles and it was in the truck when I got it at 39K. It has been my daily driver till last June, now it's weekend and holiday use. I swapped the Dex Cool out about five years ago; due for another swap when I get the time . The key to the integrity with Dex Cool is to keep the system tight and leak free ....no leaks or breaches.
My two cents
Bill
