454 Vortec heads and engines
10/23/09 at 05:32:03

First what years am I looking for What years did they offer the vortec 454. I know it started in 1996 when did they stop?

What is the performance potential of these heads? I know the 1996 and up vortec 454 was rated at 290 hp not sure about torque. Now these are roller cam engines. If you took one of these engines and maybe used a little bigger cam you good make a really good modest hp and make good relaible power.
If you used the stock ecm with the 1996 and up efi manifold that is a real multiport fuel injection and its programable it would be a decent performer and all emissions legal.
Or I could use an aftermarket 4 barrel styel intake and the stock 454 SS TBI and ecm cause I have all ready have a 454 SS throttle body and ecm. I just need to keep the egr and make it legal.

Well so are these vortec engine worth a dam I mean I dont need 502 hp numbers. I mean they all ready make 290 hp and it would take just a little more cam to make some good numbers. I figure these engines all ready have a roller cam so it also makes it a good candidate.

So has anyone else used these vortec heads they should be a little better than the stock peanut port heads. Any opinions?

I run a gen VI 454 in mine. I changed the heads for aluminium to run more boost but those vortec heads are peetty good for what you are doing. There are improvements over the markIV engine. The heads are 100CC chamber with effective combustion design. Cooling flow in the block should be better as the flow is changed to cool with almost same temperature front to rear of the block. The block is allready for rollercam and oil lubrication in the block is improved.
I would go with multiport injection and they have EGR as well Smiley Smiley

I have the Gen VI with the vortecs, I kept everything basically simple, just a mild port job and a slightly larger cam, but I am still running the TBI on the 3764 intake.  I know it still needs some tuning with the computer, but on the dyno it did lay down 300hp/400tq at the rear wheels.

1996-2000 were Vortec 454's , 2001 the 454 was dropped in favor of the 8.1L 496 CID "Vortec 8100" , the 454 was/is still avalible as a GMPP crate engine and in marine applications and were and still are based on the GenVI platform.  Smiley

I really don't know all of the flow #'s and such about the vortec's , but I will tell you the quickest TBI truck on this board runs a set of RPE ported Vortec castings , low 12's IIRC  Wink

Hopefully I will have a set of Vortec's on my 502 this winter providing Mitch (RPE) can still do them for me and I have the cash.  Lips Sealed  Undecided

The GenVI is by far the best platform IMHO for mod's , like was mentioned , roller cam , good cooling , priority main oiling , etc, etc, etc.........

One should not even contemplate significant modifications without first getting the tools and ability to alter / produce firmware. The only possible mods without this would involve chrome and pressure sensitive adhesive.  Lips Sealed

Guys have made 400+HP on old Gen IV "peanut port" heads in carbureted applications quite a few times (no porting to the heads or anything that would require much work or money).  Vortec heads are better than peanut port heads in terms of flow, so the airflow potential to top 400HP is certainly there.  Making it all work with EFI.... well, I can't help you with that.

1990 SS.  Stock motor out, nasty little solid-cammed, AFR-headed 454 dropped back in it's place.  3200 stall converter but way too stock from there back.  No emissions, no EFI, no problem (except traction).  Dangerously fast, loud, anti-social, horribly inefficient and a lot of fun.

78 Malibu.  Grandmother's old go-to-church car with 35K original miles.  Mild 383 topped with a Weiand 142 mini blower.  Built TH350 trans w/ Redneck special converter.  7.5" rear that's dying quickly under the abuse of 4X more power than stock.  Mild suspension mods, WS6 steering box.  Real clean street driver with a little power under the hood.

So the 1996/1997 and up vortec 454 with a little more cam would be a good idea. To bad it seems hard to locate one. I will keep looking for an inexpensive one.

Are these a large port oval port? From all descriptions it sounds like they are an updated version of the 049 or 781 oval ports from the mark IV.
Are these bigger ports than the small peanut ports on the truck cylinder heads?

Are OK heads after extensive port work, larger valves, larger guide plates, but still have the low exaust ports. After $$ spent on valves, springs, retainers guide plates and labor to port and install valves considering the excesive weight a set of alum. after market heads becomes a better value. Now if you can get the above for under $600-700 with all mods you would possibly have a good deal.

I was looking for a low mileage complete engine. Prices vary a lot. Found a 1997 454 with 35,000 miles for $1600. Prices and mileage can go up or down I think the highest mileage engine was 140,000.
Clean it, new rings, bearings, gaskets and a slightly larger cam nothing to radical, headers ect. Drop it in the 1500 1/2 ton.
