what are the best mods to wake up a tbi 454

i just got a 7.4L  tbi motor for my project '57 3100.
it came out of a '94 3/4 ton chevy with a five speed that a tree had fallen on, it only had 60K on it so im not going to do a total rebuild.
what combo cam/carb, manifold will be best coast for dollar/performance? i have the complete wire harness  and brain box from the '94

Well, since you need not be concerned about emisson laws with your '57, you have about a thousand choices of combinations. What are your objectives? Show truck, drag truck, etc? Do you have a basic plan to start? (you'll probably get more responses if you ask for a reaction to a specific plan than an opened essay on BBC build ups)How much is your budget?

for now i want to keep it simple and the cost low. i have a '57 roller with a Nova front clip and a deep c-nothed rear frame, im going to bag it with a four link, the '94 doner had a 14 bolt that i will  shorten.

just a clean flat black rat with a rat motor and an auto trans. for crusin and fun.

What HP numbers are thinking about?  The TBI with some fuel supply mods can get close to 500 hp and still act pretty reasonable.  If you want to keep it clean looking, then ditching all the wires and going carb is the easiest.

I would dump the fuel injection. Get a 750\800 cfm carb, Edelbrock sells some good power packages, I would go with a full roller setup . But it looks so clean without all the fuel injection.

a carb dose seem to be the best way to keep it simple. a roller cam and an air gap manifold is what im leaning toward.

i want to run an auto trans with overdrive, and  from what i have been reading when you get into the 450 - 500+ hp range the trans becomes the week link. i dont want to spend more than $2000.00 for my trans.

There are 700R4s out there that will hold, but unsure of the prices.  The next option would be the 4L80E, which if you have the computer to control it would be great.  The 4L80E prices are up there though.

You can get to the 400 hp with decent heads, intake, cam, and the TBI (boosted pressure).  If you have all the sensors hooked up and a 4L80E tranny hooked into the computer it will be a nice set-up.

All depends on your preferences. Wink

The absolute cheapest things you can do and keep the fuel injection is what OldNavySS stated.   The Heads will add quit a bit price-wise.  $1700.    If you keep the stock heads but put headers, the Edel cam and Intake then you will get about 350 hp..   Adding the heads will probably give another 50hp.    Problem is that the stock TBI limits your HP.  It is only 670 cfm.

You could go with about a 750 cfm carb, an Air gap intake, and a better cam and keep the stock heads.  I'm not sure what kind of heads the 94 has.  They may be Vortec.   It is my understanding that the Vortecs are better than the stock heads that come on the 90-93SS.   (The 90-93SS has the little p-nut port heads)

The stock compression on the 90SS-93SS is really low.  About 8:1.  Not sure what it would be on the 94 truck.

Vortech heads started in 96 with the MPFI.  TBI ended in 95.

90 SS, RPE TBI 496  12.43 @ 106.6 mph.  7.848 1/8 mile, 1.638 60 ft.  Best ET with carb:  7.41 1/8 mile @ 90.5 mph, 1.55 60 ft.

what would a mild cam and headers with an pretty open exhaust, better air intake and a computer modification do in horespower? 300 in a stock engine with theese mods would be great.

Contact JimD on the forum.  He does this work for a fee.  Opens up the TBI's bored and increase the blade sizes to match.  Allows 900 cfm (I think) of airflow through it.  To take advantage the intake needs to match and the fuel pressure needs up (vacuum reference a good thing here).
