A Real Sport Truck. | |
Think of Chevy's one-off race truck as a sports car with an 6-foot trunk. Originally constructed to compete in "Road and Track Magazine's" Annual Manufacturers Challenge Cup road race, The 454SS Pickup is outfitted with such amenities as a rollcage, six point safety harnesses, and a fire extinguisher system. |
A 7.4 liter (454ci) fuel injected Big Block provides the power, and P255/50ZR16 tires on 16-inch-diameter wheels supply the traction. The modified big-block breathes through a low restriction 2.5-inch-diameter dual exhaust system. A custom ground effects package and three color graphics gives this 454SS an appropriately aggressive appearance.
The 454SS Retired undefeated after winning its single competitive appearance at Lime Rock Park.
EverGreen Takes Trucken Magazine's Performance Truck Shootout!
Jon Levits | 454SS block treated to a Crane Roller Camshaft, Arizona Speed & Marine injection system, Z-Industries PROM, Hooker headers, Flowmaster mufflers, Auto Specialties performance pulleys, K&N air filter.
This black beast from Arizona blew the other competitors away at Truckens Performance Truck shootout with an impressive 11-second pass at a buck-eighteen to become top truck of the Shootout. Also on this awesome looking Truck, Flowmaster mufflers, Art Carr Turbo 400 tranny and a whole lot of NOS nitrous oxide. The truck's best times were recorded on slicks for maximum traction with the 4.11:1 gears.
| 454SS tuned by John Lingenfelter, The master of making torque. John has a unique ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary while maintaining emissions legality and reliability. At the drag strip John had a black '91 454SS. Although it looked as stock as many others on the road today, Mickey Thompson Sportsman "street slicks" at the rear gives a little indication that this truck has a nasty secret. John drove the truck onto the launch pad at MuncieDragway and | proceeded to make a 11.96 second pass at 111 miles per hour. A peek under the hood reveals a 605 cubic inch big-block. On this engine package, John uses a Chevrolet Bowtie block with a taller deck than OEM blocks and 4-bolt mains. The bare block is machined and bored to 4.560 and uses a 4.625 stroke from a Callies forged crank and Oliver billet connecting rods. A Comp cams hydraulic roller camshaft is used along with CNC ported Dart Aluminum heads. | The heads are fitted with 2.250 intake and 1.88 exhaust valves and are operated by a set of Comp Cams stainless steel, 1.7 ratio roller rockets. The 605 was topped off with Lingenfelters electronic multi-port fuel injection system. 2-1/8 " diameter tube headers and bright red, aluminum valve covers sporting the Lengenfelter performance nomenclature. With an 11.5:1 compression ratio the big-block Chevy runs on 92 octane unleaded fuel and produces 605 horsepower and 780 ft. lbs. of tire smoking torque. |
| 605 Cubic Inch Chevy Power! The engine features 11.5:1 compression with CNC Ported aluminum heads, Roller camshaft and Lingenfelter's Multi-Port fuel injection system. | The Big Block produces 605 horsepower and 780 ft. lbs. of torque all within 49-state emissions standards and it purrs like a kitten. |
Ennis Texas is known around the Dallas/Ft Worth area for it's drag strip and Robby Hauk runs his 454SS there. These pictures were taken at the 97 Super Chevy show where Robby showed off his truck and show he can! Robby's truck is so clean you can eat off of it. Robby has been experimenting with several different things on his truck lately, His truck is stock (except a few mods) with the block bored .030 with 454 LS6 pistons, stock two-barrel throttle body, Edelbrock headers, cam and manifold. And with that he is running really good E.T.'s. We think so judging by the numbers he has. These pictures are a little dark and have been taken from a distance. We will have them updated as soon as possible.
Robby started the day out as most people do with prepping his truck and waiting in the staging lane. He uses drag slicks. Seen here with a great burn out, he had them good and hot for a great run.
Watching Robby roll up to the line was exciting. Just seeing a 454SS at the track was thrilling. He rolled up expecting on his first pass to run the high 13's.
Robby's first run was really good with 13.31sec. at 102.21 mph. It was great to watch. Looking at Robby's truck you can see the thing grab with the wrinkle wall slicks, its hugging the strip hard. Launching as you know is tough for a truck but Robby's truck does a good job with this.
He does say though that he could do better. His second run was 13.24 at 102.75 mph., even better than his first timeslip. In between races Robby tweeks with different things to get it to run even better!
| Here in Dallas its hot in the summer. When Robby ran his truck here in June it had to be at least 100+ degrees and muggy. We are all looking forward to seeing him continue to lower his E.T at this track. | |||
Bob Hauk and his son Robby have nearly identical 454 powered "Suburban" tow vehicles. Bob's race truck has a 502 and Robby's a 454. The Hauk's are truly a racing family.
Last fall Bob and Robby showed up at the Ennis, Texas dragstrip and brought both of their trucks this time. Bob's 502 powered 454SS was all shined up and later proved to be a real powerhouse!
Bob says that his 502 powered truck puts out around 650 H.P.! All that in a truck weighing 4700 lbs. Don't forget to check out Bob's Truck on the Showcase Page!
On Bob's first run he took it sort of easy, and turned a 12.59 E.T. at 108 mph. A great time considering, only a 1.89, 60ft. reaction time, normal is in the 1.70's . Robby came out of the day with a 13.18 @ 104.9 mph. with the stock two-barrel injection. He will be in the 12's easy with a good track and a little more tweaking.
Whoa! Bob really gets that 502 to hook up. He even pulls the front wheels off the ground during this run!
| Bob and Robby really have a good time thrashing on their exceptional trucks, both at the track and at home. Rumor has it that Bob's youngest son is readying a 383 cu. in. small block powered '74 Camaro. The Ford guys better eat before they get to the track. The Hauk family will eat their lunch! |
